Elephants Never Forget

"Elephants Never Forget" is a song by British progressive metal band Haken. It is the eighth track on the band's 2023 album Fauna.

At just over 11 minutes, it is the longest song on Fauna.

Basis

The song draws heavily from the life of Joseph Merrick, a Victorian man famous for his deformities, and more well known by his alias as "The Elephant Man". However, according to Charlie Griffiths, the song is not directly about Merrick.

The song draws from Griffiths' passion of paleontology, with references to woolly mammoths and the sunken landmass of Doggerland.

Production

According to Richard Henshall, "Elephants Never Forget" was originally presented to the band in its near entirety by Charlie Griffiths, with the rest of the band trimming sections until finished. The song was heavily inspired by Stephen Sondheim musicals, particularly his 1980 production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Take a little look behind the curtain
If you dare
If you are certain?
Gaze up a perversion
Cross my palm
A penny will buy you a soul

Pain, the only thing it feels
Bury your shame
We are all friends here
Ladies and not so gentlemen
A specimen so disturbing
Behold our beast of burden!

I remember, I remember another way
I remember, I remember a better day
I remember, I remember another way
I remember, long before humanity

Must've disappointed it's father
Does it have an elephant mother?
Should we take it over to the gallows?
Why's it hiding in the shadows?

He, hidden by a veil of misery
Woven by a thousand threads of ire
Forced to live a life of
Secrecy in abnormality

If I should fail in pleasing you
Could I create myself anew?
Would I be measured by my soul?
Could I be treasured in your home?
Take me

I remember, I remember another way
I remember, I remember a better day
I remember, I remember another way
I remember, long before humanity

I feel something inside of me
The noble beast of dignity
The see the symbol in my hand
Leviathan of Doggerland

Tell me who I am
Pull me from the sand
Help me understand
Take my hand

Maketh me lie down beside the water's edge
Leadeth me through paths of righteousness
Thou art with me, thy rod and staff comfort me
In the presence of my enemies

Heavy I drag my footsteps
Jackals prowl a dog-draped, could Whitechapel
Mammoth ghosts tusk my demons
Ancient soldiers stand in apparition

Behind the curtain in the corner of the room
Pathetic specimen you cower in the gloom

I, hidden by a veil of dignity
Woven by a thousand threads of ire
I choose to live a life of
Secrecy in my ascendancy

If I should fail in pleasing you
Could I create myself anew?
Would I be measured by my soul?
Could I be treasured in your home?
Take me

I remember, I remember another way
I remember, I remember a better day
I remember, I remember another way
I remember, long before humanity
I never will forget you
